Paternity Testing Services

There are basically two types of Paternity Tests; Legal and Non-Legal

Choosing which type of paternity test that is right for your special circumstances is a very important consideration. There are several factors to consider before making this determination. For example, a child is not entitled to receive financial support from their father, an inheritance, or social security benefits until paternity is legally established.

Similarly, a biological father also has no legal rights to a child until paternity is legally established. He will not have any legal rights to parenting time with the child or rights to major decisions concerning the child’s medical treatment, religion or education.

The only difference between the two types of tests is the procedures followed at the time of sample collection. The laboratory methods are identical. However, the results of the non-legal test are not admissible in court due to the fact that there are no photographs, or strict chain of custody procedures followed. The results are intended to provide piece of mind.

A legal paternity test must be administered and witnessed by a neutral third party and verification of proper identification is documented. A non-legal paternity test can be self-administered in the privacy of your own home.

We can help you determine which type of paternity test is right for you. Call one of our case managers today at 781-209-0701 or contact us online.

Prenatal Paternity Testing

Prenatal Paternity Testing can be used to determine paternity before the child is even born. In order to obtain a DNA sample from the fetus, an Amniocentesis (Amnio) or Chorionic Villus tissue sampling (CVS) must be performed.

Amniocentesis (Amnio)
Amniocentesis is a prenatal test in which a doctor, guided by ultrasound, passes a needle through your abdomen and into the amniotic sac surrounding your fetus. A small amount of amniotic fluid is withdrawn and analyzed to screen for fetal defects and certain genetic abnormalities such as Down syndrome. The amniotic fluid also contains the unborn child’s DNA cells. The sample should be taken between the 14th and 20th week of pregnancy. Results of the DNA test are generally available in just one week.

Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS)
Chorionic villus sampling is a prenatal test that is used to detect birth defects, genetic diseases, and other problems. During the test, a small sample of cells (called chorionic villi) is taken from the placenta where it attaches to the wall of the uterus. The collected cells also contain the unborn child’s DNA. The sample should be taken between the 9th and 12th week of pregnancy. Results of the DNA test are generally available in juts one to two weeks.

Newborn Paternity Testing
A paternity test can be performed at any age, including newborns. Samples collected at the time of birth can be done using cord blood obtained from the umbilical cord. If the sample is collected after birth, buccal swabs can be used, which is a painless method for collecting DNA samples.

Forensic Paternity Testing

A forensic paternity test is often called for when a person to be tested is unavailable. In this case, non-standard samples, such as stored blood, tissue, a toothbrush used by that person, or even hair with a root can be tested for viable DNA. Non-standard samples require a separate test in order to determine whether there is enough viable DNA present to complete the paternity test.

Fees for testing non-standard samples vary due to the complexity of obtaining viable DNA from the sample. Please call 781-209-0701 to speak with one of our case managers or fill out our online contact form. Please be prepared to provide the following details about the sample:

  • The type of sample
  • How the sample has been stored
  • How long has the sample been stored
  • Contact information for the coroner’s or medical examiner’s office, if applicable

The average turnaround time for testing a non-standard sample is about 9 business days once we receive the sample in the laboratory.
